Open Walkie-Talkie on both iPhones with the app in the foreground. They search for each other automatically using Apple's MultipeerConnectivity (Bluetooth + Wi-Fi peer-to-peer). After a few seconds the status badge shows "1 connected" on each device. No pairing codes or accounts are required.
Apple's MultipeerConnectivity uses whichever transport is strongest: Bluetooth (about 30 meters in open air) or Wi-Fi peer-to-peer (about 70 meters in open air). Walls, metal, and crowds reduce range. For best results keep line-of-sight and avoid putting the iPhone in a tight pocket against your body.
Up to 8 iPhones in a single Walkie-Talkie session (Apple framework limit). Connections are mesh-style — everyone hears everyone, no host required.
No. Walkie-Talkie works without any internet connection. It does not use cellular or Wi-Fi for routing through a server. Audio is transmitted directly between iPhones over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi peer-to-peer.
No. The app uses Apple's MultipeerConnectivity protocol, which is iOS/iPadOS/macOS-only. It cannot talk to Android phones, FRS radios, GMRS radios, or any hardware walkie-talkie.
Bluetooth and Local Network are needed to discover and connect to other iPhones running the app. Microphone is needed to capture your voice while you hold the talk button. The app does not record audio to disk, does not access your contacts, and does not request any other permission.
Tap the gear icon at the top right of the home screen, then edit the "Nickname" field. New connections will show the new name. Existing connections may need to be re-established to refresh the display name.
Settings → Voice effect lets you pick Robot, Helium, Monster, Radio, or Normal. The effect is applied on your device to inbound audio. Your friends will hear your voice as you actually sound — each listener chooses their own effect. Press "Test voice" to preview the selected effect.
Move closer to the other iPhone (reduce distance, remove obstacles). Make sure both iPhones have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled. Quit other apps that may be using the microphone. If you're in a crowded Bluetooth environment (concert, conference), try moving to a quieter spot.
Walkie-Talkie supports the iOS "Audio" background mode so a connection can stay alive when the screen turns off, but the press-and-hold transmit button only works when the app is in the foreground. We may explore a Lock Screen widget in a future release.
Locally on your iPhone using SwiftData. Nickname, voice effect preference, and toggles never leave the device. Voice audio is never recorded.
Delete the app. All preferences are wiped along with the app.
