Flashlator was born from the one situation every nomad dreads: no signal and no translator.
I was in a small village in rural Japan, my data roaming had just been cut off, and I needed to ask a pharmacist whether a medication was safe. I opened every translation app I had — and they all required an internet connection to work. I ended up using a combination of gestures and badly drawn diagrams.
That night I found out Apple had shipped the Translation framework — a full on-device translation engine built right into iOS 18. I built Flashlator in a week. It translates 12 languages entirely on your iPhone, using your microphone and Apple's own engine. No cloud, no network, no excuses.
Speak and get the translation
Hold the mic button, say your sentence, and see the translation appear in real time. On-device speech recognition via SFSpeechRecognizer.
Works without Wi-Fi or data
Apple Translation framework processes everything locally on your iPhone. Nothing leaves your device — ever. Land anywhere and it works.
12 languages, no subscription
English, Spanish, Portuguese (BR), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Hindi. Completely free.
Save your favorite translations
Bookmark any translation as a favorite with a tap. Stored locally in SwiftData. Accessible instantly, even when offline.
Text-to-speech in every language
Tap the speaker icon to hear the translation read aloud via AVSpeechSynthesizer. Hand the phone to the other person — they hear it in their language.
Zero tracking, zero account
No registration, no email, no analytics SDK, no server. Your mic audio is processed locally and never transmitted. Uninstall and nothing remains.
100% free. Forever.
Flashlator has no subscription, no In-App Purchases, no ads, no paywall. You download it, you use it, you keep it.
